Finding somewhere genuinely accessible to stay shouldn't be the hardest part of a holiday. But for too many wheelchair users, it still is.
A wheelchair accessible touring caravan changes that. It's your home-on-wheels — fully adapted to your needs, going exactly where you want to go, with no compromises and no surprises.
At Coachbuilt, we've been building wheelchair accessible leisure vehicles since 2009. We hold a King's Award for Innovation and we're the UK's most trusted specialist in accessible caravan and motorhome conversions. Every LIV. caravan we build is a touring caravan - towable, mobile, and built from the ground up around the person who's using it.
No two are built exactly the same. Because no two people are.

Why Accessible Caravanning Is Unlike Anything Else
When you live with a disability or care for someone who does, travel comes with a mental checklist that never really switches off. Will the hotel room actually be accessible? Will the shower work for me? Is there enough space for my wheelchair? What if it isn't right when we get there?
A touring caravan — your touring caravan, adapted exactly for you — removes that checklist entirely.
You bring your own accessible space wherever you go. The wetroom is yours. The ceiling hoist is yours. The bed height is yours. It doesn't matter if the campsite is a five-star resort or a remote clifftop in Pembrokeshire. Your home-on-wheels comes with you.
That freedom is something our customers describe as life-changing. Not because it removes the disability, but because it removes the uncertainty. You can go further. Stay longer. Say yes to trips you'd have previously declined.
And because touring caravans can go almost anywhere — coastal sites, national parks, remote countryside, places no accessible hotel can reach — the range of experiences genuinely opens up.
We also build wheelchair accessible motorhomes if you're looking for an all-in-one vehicle.
What Actually Makes a Caravan Wheelchair Accessible?
'Wheelchair accessible' gets used loosely. A grab rail and a wider door do not make a caravan truly accessible for most wheelchair users. Here's what to actually look for.
Wide-Access Entry Door
A standard caravan door is around 550mm wide — fine for an ambulatory person, completely impractical for a powered wheelchair. A genuinely accessible caravan needs a minimum of 720mm clear opening for most mid-size powerchairs, and ideally 800mm+ for larger models. The door modification also needs to account for the door frame, hinges, and any furniture positioned directly inside.
Entry Lift or Winch Ramp
Caravans have a step entry by default. Removing that step requires either a hydraulic entry lift (motorised, smooth, minimal effort) or a 12v powered winch ramp. The right choice depends on your wheelchair type, transfer ability, and how often the caravan will be moved. We'll always advise on this during your consultation.
Ceiling Track Hoist System
For many wheelchair users, a ceiling track hoist isn't a luxury — it's what makes independent travel with a carer or partner genuinely possible. A correctly installed hoist allows transfers from the bed to the wheelchair, and from the wheelchair into the wetroom, without requiring a second pair of hands every time. We install full ceiling track systems across the bedroom and bathroom zones.
Accessible Wet Room
A proper accessible wetroom has a roll-in shower with no threshold, a fold-down or removable shower seat, a detachable shower head on an adjustable rail, grab rails in the correct positions, and enough floor space to manoeuvre. It also needs the right drainage gradient, which requires planning at the conversion stage — not as an afterthought.
E&P Hydraulic Levelling System
Levelling a caravan on an uneven pitch sounds like a minor detail. For wheelchair users it isn't. An unlevel surface affects every transfer, every movement, every time you get in or out of bed. E&P hydraulic levelling allows precise, powered levelling at the touch of a button.
We install E&P levelling systems as part of our accessible conversion service.
Profiling and Height-Adjustable Bed
A fixed-height bed in a standard caravan is a problem. Profiling beds allow the backrest and leg sections to be adjusted electronically, making independent repositioning possible and reducing carer workload significantly. Height-adjustable beds allow the correct transfer height for the individual user.
Layout and Turning Space
This is the detail that catches people out. A caravan might have a wetroom and a wide door but still be completely inaccessible because the internal layout doesn't allow a wheelchair to navigate between spaces. CoachBuilt designs every layout around real wheelchair turning circles — not just regulatory minimums.
12v Power and Charging
Medical equipment, powered wheelchairs, hoists, height-adjustable beds — they all need charging. An accessible caravan needs a properly specified 12v and 240v electrical system with enough capacity and the right socket positions to support everything you'll actually be using.
Heating
Worth mentioning because it's often overlooked: Alde wet central heating is significantly better for people with respiratory conditions than the dry blown-air heating found in most standard caravans. It's also quieter and more evenly distributed. We always discuss heating requirements during the specification process.
Not sure which features you need? That's what the consultation is for. There's no obligation and no pressure — just a proper conversation about what works for you.
Touring Caravan vs Static Caravan: What's the Difference?
If you've arrived here searching for an accessible static caravan, it's worth making sure you're looking at the right product — because they're fundamentally different things.
A static caravan is permanently sited on a holiday park pitch. You travel to it, typically by booking a week's stay on a park. Some parks do offer accessible static caravans, though availability and quality varies significantly. You don't own the pitch permanently, and you can't take the caravan with you.
A touring caravan is what we build. It's towable — you attach it to your car and it goes wherever you go. You can use it on any campsite in the UK (or Europe), park up in your driveway, or go off-grid on a private site. You own it outright. It's your space, available whenever you want it.
For wheelchair users, a touring caravan offers something a static holiday home never can: consistency. Your adaptations are built in. You know exactly what you're arriving to, every single time.
CoachBuilt specialises exclusively in touring leisure vehicles — accessible caravans, motorhomes, and day vehicles. If you're looking for a static caravan park with accessible facilities, organisations like the Disabled Persons Caravan Club or the Caravan and Motorhome Club's accessible touring guide are a good starting point.
If you want a touring vehicle but prefer an all-in-one option without a separate tow car, our wheelchair accessible motorhomes might be worth exploring.
The LIV. Accessible Touring Caravan Range
All our accessible caravans are sold under the LIV. brand — our dedicated accessible leisure vehicle range, built on a large range of base vehicle manufacturers, such as Swift and Coachman units and fully converted in our Warwickshire workshop. Every model is a starting point, not a fixed specification.
Below you'll find our current range. Each one has been designed around real wheelchair accessibility requirements, with fully adapted layouts, wetrooms, and optional equipment packages. But the specification you receive will be uniquely yours.
This 2 berth caravan is ideal for couples, at only 6.05m at 1350kgs it is a popular choice for those looking for easy set-up and towing, combine with Motormovers, this caravan make a single set-up a breeze.
With a lounge which flexibly makes into either twin single beds or a larger transverse double bed the choice is yours. A beautifully fitted kitchen is on board, extra large wardrobe and a fantastic accessible wetroom is all included in the cost.
Four berths, 6.45m, MTPLM 1,350kg. The Swift Alpine 4 gives families real flexibility — wheelchair user and non-disabled family members sharing a space that works properly for everyone. The accessible wetroom is included, the rear bedroom layout gives the wheelchair user complete privacy and a full hoist track, and the front seating area keeps the kids happy.
If you're caravanning with children as well as managing complex accessibility needs, this is the model that gives you room to breathe.
At 7.54m and MTPLM 1,600kg you'll need a capable tow vehicle, but the Challenger Grande 580 repays that with serious living space. The larger floor area allows a more generous turning radius for larger wheelchairs, a full wetroom, and optional profiling bed and height-adjustable furniture across the bedroom zone.
The model of choice for those prioritising comfort and internal space above all else — particularly where complex equipment needs plenty of room.
Our largest touring caravan at 7.98m and MTPLM 1,800kg. The Challenger Grande 640 is built for those who want maximum space, maximum specification, and no compromises. Full ceiling hoist track, maximum wetroom area, island bed with profiling, height-adjustable worktops.
If you've been managing compromises in accessible accommodation for years and want them gone entirely, this is the model we'd point you toward.
Can't Find the Right Model?
Good — because almost nobody does. The LIV. range is a starting point. We routinely change layouts, add specification, modify dimensions, and build entirely custom configurations that don't appear anywhere on this page.
If you have a specific need or a layout you've had in your head for years, tell us. We'll tell you if it's possible — and it usually is.
How It Works: From First Call to First Trip
Buying an accessible caravan is a significant decision. You're spending real money on something that has to work perfectly for your specific needs. The last thing you need is uncertainty about what happens when you get in touch.
Here's exactly what the process looks like with CoachBuilt:
-
Free consultation. You call us, email us, or come to our Warwickshire workshop. We'll spend time understanding your exact needs: wheelchair type and dimensions, medical equipment, transfer requirements, travel plans, tow vehicle. No obligation, no pressure.
-
Design. We put together a detailed specification based on what we've discussed. You'll see the layout, the adaptations, the specification, and the pricing. We'll go back and forth until it's right.
-
Build. Once you're happy, we build. Every LIV. caravan is hand-built at our Warwickshire facility. Build time varies by specification — we'll confirm your lead time at the design stage.
-
Handover. When your caravan is ready, you'll come to us for a full handover. Every adaptation is demonstrated, every system is tested with you present. You leave knowing exactly how everything works.
VAT Zero Rating
If you're a disabled person purchasing an accessible caravan that has been adapted for your specific needs, you may be eligible for VAT zero rating under HMRC's rules for disabled people. This can represent a significant saving on your purchase price.
We can advise you on how this typically applies to our conversions. HMRC's official guidance is the definitive source and we'd always recommend confirming your own eligibility directly with HMRC or an accountant.

Accessible Caravan FAQs
How much does a wheelchair accessible touring caravan cost?
A fully wheelchair accessible touring caravan from Coachbuilt typically starts from around £40,000 and rises depending on the base model and specification. Larger models with full ceiling hoists, profiling beds, height-adjustable furniture, and premium specification can reach £50,000–£80,000+.
What's the difference between a static caravan and a touring caravan?
A static caravan is fixed on a holiday park pitch — you travel to it. A touring caravan is towable — you take it with you. CoachBuilt only builds touring caravans (plus campervans and motorhomes). For wheelchair users, a touring caravan means your own fully adapted space available whenever and wherever you want to go, without relying on holiday parks to have suitable accessible accommodation available.
Can I get VAT zero rating on a wheelchair accessible caravan?
Potentially yes. HMRC allows VAT zero rating on certain goods and services purchased by or for a disabled person, which can include adapted vehicles and their adaptations. The rules are specific and you'll need to confirm your eligibility directly with HMRC or a tax adviser. We have experience of supporting customers through this process and can explain how it typically applies to our conversions.
Do I need a special licence to tow an accessible caravan?
Most people who passed their car driving test before 1 January 1997 can tow without restriction. If you passed after that date, your licence allows you to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) in most cases — sufficient for the majority of our LIV. range. Some larger configurations may require a B+E category entitlement. We'll flag this during your consultation once we know your chosen model and tow vehicle.
How long does a Coachbuilt accessible caravan take to build?
Build times vary depending on specification complexity and current order book. We'll confirm your lead time at the design stage. Typically, expect 8–16 weeks from order to handover for most configurations. Complex bespoke builds may take longer — we'll always be transparent about timelines upfront.
Will my car be able to tow an accessible caravan?
Towing capacity depends on your vehicle's maximum towing weight rating (found in the owner's manual or on the driver's door sill plate). As a general rule, your car's towing capacity needs to exceed the MTPLM of the caravan when fully loaded. Our LIV. range starts at 1,350kg MTPLM — compatible with most modern SUVs and larger family cars. We'll check compatibility during your consultation.
What accessories do I need for accessible caravanning?
Beyond your built-in adaptations, most accessible caravanners find the following useful: a motor mover (makes hitching and positioning on a pitch much easier), a satellite TV system, additional lighting, and a robust security system. For the caravan itself, a good quality awning can double your usable space on warmer trips. We can advise on accessories relevant to your specific setup.
